Special Issue Introduction

Seismic actions are important in structural design. In order to perform reliable seismic design optimization of a structural system, computationally intensive and time-consuming nonlinear analyses of complex structures under earthquake excitations should be incorporated for rendering a practical design. Therefore, further research is needed to fully understand the performance-based seismic design with nonlinear dynamic procedure to capture the real structural behavior. The past studies mainly considered deterministic analysis of structures associated with seismic design. However, probabilistic analysis of structures can enrich the state of the art, especially considering the uncertainty in practical engineering structures at the material, component, and system levels. To overcome the challenge associated with high computational cost, machine learning techniques, such as supervised learning, unsupervised learning, semi-supervised learning and physics-informed machine learning, have been adopted recently. This Special Issue presents novel seismic design optimization methods based on machine learning.

Topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
● Multi-objective optimization for seismic design;
● Seismic fragility estimation using machine learning;
● Time-dependent seismic performance evaluation using machine learning;
● Deep learning based seismic response prediction;
● Structural seismic design using machine learning;
● Nonlinear response history analysis using machine learning based method.
